How to Get the Most Out of Your Engagement Session

November 8, 2023

Welcome! Today, we’re delving into: “How to Get the Most Out of Your Engagement Session.” Your engagement session is not just a prelude to your wedding day; it’s a chance to capture the essence of your love story and create some stunning images in the process. In this blog(/episode), we’ll explore tips and tricks to ensure your engagement session is not only enjoyable but also incredibly productive. So, let’s get started.

Tip #1: Location Matters

Selecting the right location for your engagement session is pivotal when considering the overall vibe of your photos. Think about places that hold sentimental value for you as a couple or locations that reflect your personalities. Whether it’s a charming park, a bustling downtown city area, a grassy valley at sunset, or even your favorite coffee shop—choose a location that resonates with you.

Tip #2: Wardrobe Choices

Your choice of outfits can make or break your engagement session. Coordinate your clothing with your partner, but don’t opt for identical outfits. Aim for complementary colors and styles. Also, consider the season and location when selecting your attire. And remember, comfort is key! You want to feel like yourselves during the session.

Tip #3: Timing is (Almost) Everything

The ideal time for an engagement session is during the “golden hour,” which is the hour or so before sunset. The soft, warm light during this time creates a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for romantic photos. If that doesn’t work for your schedule, discuss with your photographer the next best time for your chosen location. Early mornings work great, too! But, to be honest, a great photographer will be able to get great photos no matter the time. ;)

Tip #4: Hire a Professional and TRUST Them

You hired your photographer for a reason—because you love their work and trust their vision. Let them guide you during the session. Relax, be yourselves, and allow your photographer to capture the candid moments that truly reflect your relationship.

Tip #5: Relax and Have Fun

Most importantly, relax and have a great time! Your engagement session is a celebration of your love. Don’t stress about getting everything perfect. Laugh, cuddle, and enjoy each other’s company. The most genuine and beautiful moments are often the unplanned ones.

Here are a few additional tips:

  • Prep your hands ahead of time. Get a manicure, paint your nails. Your hands will be photographed quite a bit. Mostly because we want to see that ring! But guys, make sure to groom up, too!
  • Plan for candids, keep it moving. Don’t pause every time the shutter snaps and wait for more direction. Have fun. Make it feel like a date. If I’m your photographer, feel free to reach out to me for tips and tricks to help make it a great time.
  • Try not to have specific expectations of the final gallery. Sometimes I think people can get too caught up in their Pinterest boards and will create a specific vision for what they think their gallery should look like. Remember that your photographer is a creator, an artist, and you are unique! The only expectation you should have of your gallery is that it reflects who you truly are as a couple.

Your engagement session is a special time to capture your love in its purest form. Embrace the opportunity, enjoy the process, and trust your photographer to tell your unique love story through their lens.

That concludes this blog on how to make the most of your engagement session. We hope these tips help you create beautiful memories. Stay tuned for more wedding photography insights!
